14C28N Stainless Steel
14C28N is a modern Swedish stainless steel developed by Sandvik specifically for knife applications. It has become one of the most popular mid-range blade steels in the industry thanks to its excellent balance of edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness, and ease of sharpening.
It is often considered a “performance upgrade” over traditional steels like 440C and AUS-8, while remaining more affordable and easier to maintain than premium powder metallurgy steels.
Technical Profile
Hardness: 58–62 HRC (★★★★☆)
Edge retention: ★★★★☆
Corrosion resistance: ★★★★☆
Toughness: ★★★★☆
Sharpening: ★★★★☆
What Makes 14C28N Special
14C28N was engineered to improve edge stability and reduce carbide size compared to earlier stainless steels. The fine grain structure allows the blade to take a very clean, sharp edge while maintaining good durability.
In practical use, this means the steel feels “refined.” It sharpens easily, holds its edge well for daily tasks, and resists rust effectively even in humid or outdoor environments.
Unlike high-carbide steels such as D2, 14C28N does not sacrifice toughness for wear resistance. This makes it more forgiving during harder use.
Best Uses for 14C28N
– Everyday carry (EDC) knives
– Outdoor and camping knives
– Folding knives
– Utility and work knives
– General-purpose blades
It is one of the best all-around steels for users who want strong performance without stepping into high-end pricing.
Advantages
– Excellent overall balance
– Very good corrosion resistance
– Good edge retention for its category
– Easy to sharpen and maintain
– Tougher and more forgiving than D2
Disadvantages
– Edge retention is lower than premium steels like M390 or S35VN
– Not designed for extreme heavy-duty abuse
Maintenance Tips
14C28N is stainless and low maintenance. Basic cleaning after use is typically sufficient. It handles moisture well, making it a great choice for everyday and outdoor carry.
